Roy finds Lexi's sandwich on the trail and becomes worried, calling for her more frantically. Lexi looks into the pond, and is startled upon seeing her mother's reflection in the water, and her mother's voice urges her to come closer. Meanwhile, Roy exits the cabin and starts calling for her. Lexi goes closer to the pond and sees a strange purple glow coming from under the water. As she gets closer to the pond, she hears her mother's voice whispering to her and looks around, only to find that she is alone. She keeps walking until she comes to a pond, from which she hears soft, eerie voices. Roy dismisses her concerns, urging her to go outside and play, but not to stray too far, giving her a sandwich in case she gets hungry.Īs Lexi walks through the woods, she comes across a rotting corpse and throws away her sandwich, quickly losing her appetite. Lexi is hesitant, as her friends have told her that there are monsters in this part of the woods who eat sad people. They link their pinkies to cement their promise to remember her, and Roy tells her to go outside and play. He tells her that she has to remember that even though her mother isn't with them anymore, she'll always be in their hearts. Lexi starts to cry, and Roy goes to comfort her, assuring her that they'll go get her mother's chair tomorrow. Roy reveals that he left it at the other house, and Lexi starts to cry as the chair was made by her mother. Inside the cabin, Lexi asks her father where her tracking chair is. Her father gets out of the car, and Lexi opens her locket to look at a picture of herself and her mother. Lexi says that they have to get WiFi - they're not savages. Lexi asks if they'll have WiFi at the house, to which her father replies that they're off the grid. A car pulls up to the cabin, bearing father-daughter duo Roy and Lexi Winstead. The film then cuts to a few hours before the events of the beginning. Suddenly, something outside grabs Jackson by the arm and rips it completely out of its socket. The siblings hear something outside and Jackson goes to check the window, but finds nothing. Ellen asks Jackson what they do, and Jackson says that they kill it for what it did to Will. Ellen picks up a blunt object and prepares to hit him with it, but a shrieking from outside the cabin stops her.Įllen realizes that the monster is outside, and she and Jackson hear something on the roof.

Jackson and Ellen get up and Jackson starts to hack his shoulder with an axe, saying that this is for their brother. As he tries to run away, he trips and twists his ankle.

While the siblings are distracted, the hostage takes Jackson's knife and saws himself free. The hostage goes quiet, then laughs and says 'fuck you', and headbutts Jackson so hard he falls over. Jackson takes an boxcutter from the boxes and drags the blade down the side of their hostage's face, ordering him to talk. The man insists that he's hiding something, and Jackson's sister, Ellen, comes over and hits the hostage with a brick, telling their hostage to not lie to them. The hostage screams for help and is once again hit with the hammer. A man named Jackson is beating him with a hammer, ordering him to tell him where 'that grimy thing with the black eyes' is. The film opens with a man being held hostage at a lakeside cabin. But what do we become after death? Can we transform into something more monstrous? After losing her mother, Lexi and her father retreat to an isolated cabin to withdraw from their sorrow.
